What is the biggest difference in our lifestyle compared to 35 years ago?

Without a doubt, the rise of modern technology has impacted nearly every aspect of our lives over the past few decades. It’s this rise and pace of modern technology that has completely reshaped our lifestyle habits. As consumers, we tend to spend feverishly to ease our lives seeking every opportunity to stay ‘connected’, relying more on modern tech devices than ever before. Unfortunately, we are paying a hefty price.

What impact has it caused on our posture?

Simply put, bad posture now feels ‘good’…which is BAD!

Our posture is failing at the speed of advancing technology. More than ever before, we sit too much, move too little, and work too hard, leaving us tired, in pain, and out of shape.

We self-limit our movement freedom to the point of forgetting to even get up and take a posture break. Our growing kids follow our grown-up bad posture habits too. Everywhere you look, people of all ages are slumping and slouching when they sit forcing their bodies to give in to poor posture habits.

The impact continues; Sitting with bad posture all day is now linked to increased risks of Obesity, Diabetes, Heart Disease, Digital Dementia, and Postural Amnesia, a disconnection in the way your brain and body communicate to each other about your posture. Most people that sit all day with slouching posture can’t even recall how to actively reset natural, upright Postural Control.

Then comes the physical symptoms; back pain, neck pain, headache, numbness, and more caused by poor sitting habits like C-shaped slouching and text neck. Important posture core stabilizing muscles designed to keep your pelvis naturally upright when you sit, stand, and move deactivate when not used enough over time.

Active Glutes (your buttock muscles) help keep your posture upright by activating your pelvis (the seat of your spine) even when you sit. However, sitting too long prevents your Glutes from activating properly, limiting their overall function potential. Instead of helping to keep your spine upright when you sit, your butt flattens down against your seat pulling your spine along with it into a collapsed posture. These deactivated muscles won’t be able to help your posture when you stand and move either.

Improving Our Posture today!

Posture is a working relationship between you and your body. Treat your posture well, it will help take care of your body too. Recognizing the need to improve your posture is the first step. Begin by asking yourself either one of these two questions:

What did I do to support my posture today?

OR

What didn’t I do to support my posture today?

The choice is yours. To help along the way, here are a few tips to instantly support and improve your posture:

Walk & Work – If you have mini-meetings with your work colleagues, try taking a 15-minute walk together around your office area instead of just sitting down for your discussion. Not only will you and your colleagues improve posture, your energy, focus, and concentration will too!

If you have mini-meetings with your work colleagues, try taking a 15-minute walk together around your office area instead of just sitting down for your discussion. Not only will you and your colleagues improve posture, your energy, focus, and concentration will too!

Adjust Your Chair – Nearly everyone sits on an adjustable chair at some point during their day at work, home, or in the car. An adjustable chair can certainly help you adapt to your daily posture stress patterns. All you need to do is adjust your chair a few times each day to reduce compression stress on your back and body to prevent Postural Collapse. Don’t forget to keep your feet on the floor more often throughout each working day as well.

Active Sitting – Bad posture isn’t always your fault. Not doing something about it is. If your work place doesn’t provide you with healthy ergonomic seating options, then you need to be smart about your posture and take matters into your own hands. The new SitSmart Posture Core by BackJoy is a great addition to nearly every seat type! Not only does it customize your sitting experience, SitSmart Posture Core helps you power your posture for an active core every time you sit. Get one today!

30:30 Posture Breaks – Take ownership of your posture again. Regular Posture Breaks are a great way to keep your posture in check all day long. For every 30 minutes of sitting, simply make a postural change for just 30 seconds. Stand up, take a short walk, try Chair Yoga, go fill up your water bottle, bug your work colleague, put down your video game and say hi to your family at home. The options are plenty, but the effect is infinite.

Don’t fall prey to poor posture habits. Good posture supports better health. Don’t wait for pain to be a reminder to make a change. Remember, health is a responsibility, not a privilege. If you spend your days sitting, then it’s time to take action and do it better
